There are lots of questions for people who are new to owning cats.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Should it be a young cat or an old cat?<\/li>\n<li>Do I want a male or a female cat?<\/li>\n<li>Eine oder zwei Katzen &#8211; was ist richtig<\/li>\n<li>Is a cat a cat \u2013 or are there big differences?<\/li>\n<li>Do different breeds behave differently?<\/li>\n<li>How much does a cat cost \u2013 purchase, equipment, maintenance?<\/li>\n<li>Longhair or shorthair cat?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this series I\u2019d like to take a look at the most frequently asked questions, and if you\u2019re not sure, or have a question \u2013 I\u2019d be happy to answer your comments.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Male or female cat?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Opinion is never so divided as on this fundamental question: male or female.<\/p>\n<p>Just like people, neither cat gender has purely positive or negative inherited characteristics and behaviours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1038 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"kate-und-xaver\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver-1030x715.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver-705x489.jpg 705w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver-450x312.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/kate-und-xaver.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cPope\u201d of cat research, Prof Leyhausen, writes on the subject in his book, Cat Soul: \u201cBoth genders have positive and negatives. Females tend to defend their inherited territory aggressively; males focus on increasing their status \u2013 but castration can change this. In my experience, male cats are more prepared to make friends\u2026In general, you have the fewest problems by combining female and male cats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><u>Cat Soul (Katzenseele) by Prof Paul Leyhausen<\/u><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to answer the cat gender issue from my own experience. Every cat is a unique individual \u2013 and, in my view, many character traits and behaviours can\u2019t be reduced to \u201cfemale\u201d and \u201cmale\u201d. So it\u2019s not just \u201cmoody\u201d females and laid-back males \u2013 there are just as many cuddly females and shy, retiring males. But I don\u2019t want to name an example.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1037 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"katze-izzy-kater-oakley\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley-1030x766.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley-705x524.jpg 705w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley-450x334.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.profeline.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/katze-izzy-kater-oakley.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Like most kinds of animals, male and female cats are different in terms of body size and weight.<\/p>\n<p>On the left you can see our <u>calico cat<\/u> Izzy (with three different colours) and our blue tomcat Oakley \u2013 both British Shorthair cats.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the difference in size and weight clearly \u2013 and look at the different shapes of their heads. Tomcats tend to develop stronger cheeks \u2013 the head is rounder and larger \u2013 often called a tomcat head.<\/p>\n<p>And if you can\u2019t decide if you want a boy or a girl \u2013 then think about getting both.
